BETTINA VON ZWEHL AND TOM HUNTER: FACING HISTORY - CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITURE. VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM, 27 JULY 2015 - 26 FEBRUARY 2016.

A display of 80 prints and photographs drawn from the V&A's collection exploring the variety of artists' responses to the idea of portraiture over the last 20 years. On display will be work by over 20 artists including Grayson Perry, Thomas Ruff, Gavin Turk, Tom Hunter and Bettina von Zwehl.

The theme of the display was prompted by the acquisition of the series Made up Love Song by Bettina von Zwehl, a previous V &A artist-in-residence. Reprising the tradition of 16th Century painted portrait miniatures, the 34 photographs portray Sophia Birikorang, a V&A Visitor Services Assistant.

SUSAN DERGES: BENEATH THE SURFACE, 21 MAY - 24 AUGUST 2015. SOMERSET HOUSE, LONDON

Beneath the Surface reflects the international scope and historical depth of the V&A’s preeminent collection of photography. This exhibition of some 200 works focussing on images of water, the topography of the city and the people within it. Depictions of water - implying depths beneath the surface - provide a metaphor for the richness of the V&A’s collection, and the exhibition also includes photographs of the museum itself.
Selected from a collection that dates back to 1852, Beneath the Surface comprises works by Brassaï, Susan Derges and William Strudwick alongside unseen or rarely-displayed photographs chosen by Martin Barnes, the museum’s Senior Curator of Photographs.

BETTINA VON ZWEHL: ALBUM 31, BETTINA VON ZWEHL AND SOPHY RICKETT. LIBRARY OF BIRMINGHAM GALLERY. 20 JUNE - 29 AUGUST 2015

Album 31 is an exhibition featuring new work by Bettina von Zwehl and Sophy Rickett. The artists were commissioned by GRAIN and Library of Birmingham to respond to the Library’s photographic archives, specifically those of Victorian photographer and parliamentarian Sir Benjamin Stone.
The Album 31 exhibition features new work and tests the implications of playing with meaning through re-contextualising and re-positioning subject matter, to resist the possibility of a single interpretation and resolution.
