Edgar Martins is interviewed about his recent project and book What Photography & Incarceration have in Common with an Empty Vase.
“All the imagery that we associate with prisons works to legitimise a certain idea that we have about incarceration,” Edgar Martins tells BJP journalist Anna Sansom, in an interview about his latest project, derived from a Grain commission working with inmates at HMP Birmingham. “So, I thought, ‘How do I overcome this’?” The results are as much an enquiry into photographic representation as they are about prison.
