Samuel Fosso included in Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination at MoMA
On view through July 25, 2026
Ideas of Africa brings together historic and contemporary photography to show how portraiture became a space for self-expression, solidarity, and political vision across Africa and the diaspora during moments of profound social change.
In his African Spirits series, Fosso embodies influential political, intellectual, and cultural figures from Africa and the African diaspora. Pictured here, he assumes the iconic presence of Angela Davis, echoing her unmistakable afro and visual authority. Through these self-portraits, Fosso demonstrates an astute understanding of how images gain power through circulation—carrying history, resistance, and collective imagination across time.
