Tate Modern devotes room to the work of Samuel Fosso

Until 20 December 2026
As part of Tate Modern’s Performer and Participant—which explores how artists between the 1960s and the 1990s opened up new spaces for participation—Samuel Fosso is presented in a dedicated room at the museum, featuring works from 70s Lifestyle and African Spirits.

“Photography is a form of therapy that has enabled me to bring about a sense of self and tell the world that I exist,” Fosso has said. Through self-portraiture, Fosso prompts us to ask how famous figures influence us—whether in the clothes we wear, the poses we make, or the ideologies we believe—and, ultimately, when and how we perform.
